The (Athletic) Sense of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

What are Omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential, polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are essential because our bodies need them to function normally but cannot produce them themselves. Therefore, we must obtain them through diet or supplements.

The three most important omega-3 fatty acids for our bodies are:

  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA or LNA)
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

Omega-3 fatty acids are mainly obtained from fiber-rich foods (such as flaxseed and walnuts) and from “fatty” fish like salmon, mackerel, and herring.

Although fiber-rich foods have positive effects on gut health, athletes often avoid them around training and competitions. This is because fibers slow down gastric emptying and are fermented in the gut, which can lead to bloating, gas, or cramps. During exercise, blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract also decreases, making these symptoms more likely to occur. This, of course, does not benefit performance.

Omega-3 supplements as an efficient solution

Omega-3 supplements offer an efficient solution. They are well absorbed by the body and are an ideal complement to athletes' carbohydrate-rich, fiber-restricted meals.

In addition, omega-3 fatty acids provide several athletic benefits:

  • Support a more efficient use of oxygen in the muscles
  • Stimulate fat burning, leading to better utilization of fat as fuel
  • Support muscle building through stimulation of muscle protein synthesis
  • Act as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, which promotes recovery after strenuous exercise
  • Promote concentration and mental sharpness, contributing to better athletic performance

Finally, omega-3 fatty acids also support the health of the heart and blood vessels. They can contribute to a lower resting heart rate, healthy blood pressure, and improved blood circulation. This promotes the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, which is essential for optimal performance.

Belgian recommendations advise a daily intake of 2200 mg ALA and a total of 500 mg EPA and DHA (250 mg of each).
With our Omega 3 Vegan formula, everyone, including vegetarians and vegans, can enjoy the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in a sustainable way.
